Objective

Take your wrestling strategies, skills and techniques to the next level by enhancing structure and teaching strategies in many ways. This can be achieved by making sure stakeholders learn and leverage it as part of their operating model as a coach or athlete. Below are a key set of objectives that would be good to achieve as a result of these efforts:

  • Provide a structured set of skills that are the baseline set of skills for wrestlers have across k-12 grades, from novice to advanced.
  • Provide a vocabulary that is consistent across coaches and athletes. If a wrestler develops through the program hearing things the same way, they will be able to develop better. This is also critical for match time coaching. Under the stress of a match, a wrestler should not have to interpret what a coach is saying.
  • Provide a skills map the identifies the set of techiques along with an ontology to show coaches, parents and athletes how these words are associated with one another.
  • Provide video instruction for each technique that will be available to coaches, athletes and parents for review and understanding.
  • Provide video showing athletes training and drilling the techniques. This will be intended to show the level of intensity and fluidness that a successful wrestler much achieve to be able to execute the technique.
  • Provide an overarching strategy for the key concepts in the wrestling technique ontology in order for the athlete and the coaches to better understand the key objectives of the collection of techniques. For example, on bottom the strategy is to create distance and angles between the bottom wrestler and top wrestler’s hips. It is the distance and angle the provide the opportunity to escape. This is achieve through constant motion and movement both forwards and backwards.
  • Provide video showing a coached drilling session highlighting the flow and achievement of the strategies outlined.
  • Integrated with an ontology for an age appropriate categorization that coaches can leverage to make sure they are teaching the core baseline skills for a specific age group.

Vocabulary

Skills – These are core athletic abilities that are associated with the sport of wrestling. These should not be confused with techniques. Skills are smaller units of athletic capabilities that are used to execute techniques but are not the technique themselves. Skills can be developed and are leveraged across multiple techniques. In general a technique can be thought of as a move that is used to score points. Where a skill is used to establish some form of advantage but not point scoring. Stance is a skill. And, a double leg takedown is a technique.

Techniques – These are collections of skills executed in a certain way in an effort to score points on your opponent. The differentiation between technique and skills for this curriculum is that techniques are used to score points and skills are used to establish some form of positional advantage.

Strategies – These are conceptual approaches and rationales for why we use a set of skills and techniques in our training. A strategy should resonate with an athlete to help them understand why they are doing what they are doing.

Curriculum Nodes – Curriculum nodes are used to create folders to organize strategies, skills and techniques into. They are the main organization mechanism of the curriculum.

Age Level – Core skills and techniques have age level associated with them. This is used to highlight at what age level the introduction of the skill or technique is to be made. It will also come with a definition of to what extent an athlete should be able to perform the skill or technique. Age levels are configurable but the preconfigured levels are Novice (K-2nd grade),Elementary (3rd-5th grade), Middle School (6th-8th grade) and HighSchool (9th-12th grade).

Coaches Responsibility - A coach should be able to understand this vocabulary, the skills, the strategies and the techniques in entirety. And, most importantly apply them to the age level they are teaching. It will be of the most benefit for the coach to be able to associate the importance of the skills to the strategies. The wrestler will benefit by understanding the fundamental strategies that are needed to achieve success and be able to see how the basic skills are leveraged. This will be a challenge for some coaches. They may only appreciate and associate their wisdom to techniques that they learned as a prior wrestler. Great care and caution should be taken on getting the coaches to understand and appreciate this methodology.

Assessment

Assessment - Coaches should have an ability to assess a wrestlers capabilities in these categories. While it will not be a responsibility of every coach to do formal assessments, they still should understand the assessment construct and be able to give input and feedback to wrestlers and other coaches who are responsible for this using the approach we have selected. Below is an assessment structure that emulates a rubric. There are multiple dimensions that a coach should think about when assessing a wrestler and providing feedback. Technique and Skill Knowledge - For technique, does the wrestler know the mechanics of the technique from beginning to end? For skills, did the wrestler know the skill and leverage it in appropriate context of techniques? Can the wrestler display the flow of the piece of the technique or skill in complete execution?

  • Developing - The wrestler didn't recognize technique or knew very little.
  • Effective - The wrestler recognized the technique and knew some or most of the technique.
  • Exceptional - The wrestler knows all of the technique of the move.

Execution - Does the wrestler execute with appropriate athletic intensity from start to finish?

  • Developing - The wrestler displayed a lack of explosiveness and/or strength when executing technique.
  • Effective - The wrestler displayed explosiveness and/or strength when executing technique but may still require more for execution in competition.
  • Exceptional - The wrestler displayed explosiveness in all aspects of execution to a level that would be effective in competition.
